Thank you for visiting DrSears.com.  Medicine is not as complicated as we think, and likewise nutrition is not as simple as we are led to believe.  My goal at DrSears.com is to make you think about both medicine and nutrition from a new perspective.  That new perspective is based upon understanding the molecular basis of inflammation.  It’s about how inflammation is the underlying cause of chronic disease, and how our diet can either reduce inflammation or increase it.

In the final analysis, it’s all about your genes,  especially how an anti-inflammatory diet, like the Zone Diet, can turn off inflammatory genes and simultaneously turn on anti-inflammatory genes that promote cellular rejuvenation, repair and healing.  Your ability to control inflammation becomes the molecular definition of wellness.   This is why I hope you will use DrSears.com as your destination site to get the latest breaking information on anti-inflammatory medicine and its impact on 21st-century health care.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Americans are still too fat, but the obesity epidemic in the United States appears to be waning a bit, U.S. researchers said on Wednesday.

Q: Thank you for sharing your latest groundbreaking research recently in New York.  Due to the overwhelming amount of questions, I was unable to ask the following: I take cod liver oil daily. In a 12/29/09 NY Science Times article it was recommended using flaxseed oil rather than fish oil as the latter contains unknown amounts of vitamin A, which in excess can be detrimental to bones. I am concerned with bone loss. What is your recommendation?

A:  It is only the liver oils that are rich in vitamin A.  The fish body oils are devoid of Vitamin A.  Flaxseed oil has no Vitamin A either, but the short-chain omega-3 fatty acids in flaxseed oil are very poorly converted to the long-chain omega-3 fatty acid (EPA and DHA) that gives fish oil its remarkable benefits.  I am surprised that the Science Times would make such statements without a little fact-checking.

The common refrain for treating obesity is simply “eat less and exercise more”.  With obesity rates increasing, how is it possible that so many Americans seem to be unable to follow such simple instructions?  The answer may lie in our genes.

Your book “The Zone” has been the best at explaining what goes on with my body and diabetes.  For years my providers and the folks in the diabetes clinic have not been able to explain what was going on.  I was given handouts and told follow this and life will be good.
