Following the Zone with hiatal hernia
Last Updated Aug 2007
Q: My 60-year-old mother follows the Zone Diet and suffers from hiatal hernia. Her
medical doctor tells her to eat smaller meals to control its effects. Following the
Zone, she eats every five hours. How can she eat smaller meals on the Zone? Every 2
1/2 hours?
A: Dear Mark,
Any time an internal body part pushes into an area where it doesn't belong, it's
called a hernia. The hiatus is the junction of the between the esophagus and the
stomach. The end result is GERD, commonly known as heart burn. Eating smaller
meals in more frequent intervals significantly improves insulin control and will
decrease the GERD. She should have the same number of blocks per day but split into
whatever eating intervals work best for her.
