Fish oil and pregnancy
Last Updated Aug 2007
Q: I have been taking 5 grams of fish oil throughout my pregnancy. I am now almost 27
weeks and just want to make sure it is OK to still take that amount. My doctor
doesn't seem to be worried.
A: I usually recommend about 2.5 grams of EPA and DHA per day during pregnancy. It is
the last trimester that is the most important, as the unborn child is making
250,000 new neurons per minute and needs omega-3 fatty acids to lay down these new
neural networks.
