Soy milk for 1-year-old

Last Updated Sep 2007

Q: My 1-year-old son is allergic to cow's milk, and I was told to give him soy milk when I wean him from breast milk. However, there is so much controversy about giving babies soy milk. I am so confused. I take OmegaRx and also plan on giving it to my son once he is weaned? Will that affect the hormones in soy?

A: I would not recommend soy milk for a young child because the isoflavones in soy milk can inhibit the normal binding of thyroid hormone to its receptor. Try rice- based milk as a substitute for soy milk. The OmegaRx is incredibly important to maintain a constant supply of omega-3 fatty acids necessary for brain development.
