Young fencer

Q: Hello, Dr Sears,
My son is a 14-year-old fencer and is doing very well at the sport. His coach, a two-time National Women's Epee Champion, was on the US team for years and as a fencing coach is superb. Our problem is that her nutritional advice is very outdated, and my son complains that she won't let him eat much during competitions and is a proponent of carbo-loading beforehand. She is a very difficult person to convince, and I've been on the Zone for years now and plan on it for a lifetime. Can you point me to any literature that I can provide her explaining the benefits of the Zone Diet for athletes? Do you have any details of the 24 gold medals mentioned on your Web site? The National Championships are coming up at the end of June, and I'd love to sway the coach into the Zone. Thanks.
Steve J.
A: Dear Steve,
The best fencer in the world is Valentina Vezzali of Italy, who has won three Gold Medals. She is a long-time Zone Diet follower. If your son wants to be as good as Valentina, he should eat like her.
