My 6-year-old twins have been on daily fish oil since they were 1 year old. We started giving them capsules when they were beginning to eat table foods, and they would just crunch them up and swallow them like they were candy! To this day, they do not have a negative reaction to "eating" the capsules, although we are starting to teach them how to swallow instead of chew capsules. (They think it's cool that the liquid comes out when they bite it open -- yuck!) Both boys began reading and writing at age 2 with very little besides typical parental encouragement. We did not set out to teach our kids to do this at age 2. They just have a natural thirst for learning. They rank above the 95th percentile for reading and math and can understand concepts, such as exponential value, multiplication, fractions, adding coins and dollars, and display a higher level thinking and reasoning skills than the others in their kindergarten class. I am quite convinced that good parenting combined with a daily regimen of fish oil and a near-Zone diet (we are not religious about it, but always keep the big picture of the Zone in mind when feeding them) has laid the foundation for my super-smart twins' development.
