Try a proven way to live longer

Last Updated Aug 2008

Want a longer live? Who doesn’t? According to an article in the December 2007 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, if you follow a Mediterranean diet, you can have that wish. In fact, the study found a 20-percent decrease in overall mortality for people who followed that diet compared to those individuals who didn’t.

But what exactly is the Mediterranean diet? It seems as if it is rich in fruits and vegetables, fish and monounsaturated fats (both nuts and olive oil). Gee, it seems a lot like the Zone Diet. In essence, the Zone Diet is the evolution of the Mediterranean diet to a higher level of hormonal control since most of the high glycemic-load carbohydrates  (bread and pasta) in the standard Mediterranean diet are replaced with even greater amounts of low glycemic load-carbohydrates (like vegetables and fruits). What this means that you will be eating even more food (as measured by the volume on your plate) with fewer calories. It’s like combining calorie restriction with the Mediterranean diet, and all without hunger or deprivation. Now that’s a proven way to truly live longer.
