Cancer

Last Updated Nov 2008

Q: I have just read a book by Brian Peskin called "The Hidden Story of Cancer".   As one of your fondest followers, I am confused by what he says and claims.  He claims that the scientist Otto Warburg found in the 1920s that all cancer is caused by cellular hypoxia brought about by transfats, pollution, and other poisons that are in our air, food and water, in addition to the fact that our food, which is now grown with pesticides anti-biotics, and herbicides, etc., no longer has the nutrients that food once had many years ago. He also claims that in order to fix this problem, we have to ingest parent EFAs, which are unprocessed oils, such as sunflower oil, etc., plus nut and seed oils.  We have to get omega 6 oils in a 1:1 or 2:1 proportion with omega 3s that do not come from fish, as according to him, all fish oils are either polluted or processed with heat and are therefore no good.  Could you please help me with the science on this? He recommends eating only organic meat, chicken, fish, eggs etc., almost like the Atkins diet with only a few fruits and vegetables. Thanks so much.
A: Unfortunately, the author seems to know very little about Warburg’s work. It is elevated levels of glucose in the blood that drives cancer cells as well as increased inflammation. Just follow the Zone Diet to stabilize blood glucose and use ultra-refined fish oils to reduce inflammation. The recommended excess omega-6 fatty acids will increase inflammation and therefore the risks of cancer.
