Fish Oil and vasodilation

Last Updated Aug 2009

Q: There is some discussion about fish oil as a vasodilator.  If it is, should the use of nitric oxide supplements be suspended?

A:  The two supplements work on different aspects of the vasodilation process.  Fish oil reduces the production of vasoconstricting eicosanoids, whereas supplements containing arginine increase the production vasodilating molecules, such as nitric oxide.  Together they are synergistic.
