Food allergies & the Zone

Last Updated Aug 2007

Q: Hello Dr. Sears,

I have in the past had seasonal, dust etc. allergies. However, two years ago because of an extensive renovation project in my office, I developed severe allergies to Soy, Mushrooms & Eggs. Doctor believes my immune system went into overload trying to combat the dust, dirt, glue and new carpet in the office. Question is: Do you have any thoughts about how this diet might help with the food allergies? Also any thoughts about configuring the diet to accommodate my need not to have anything with soy in it. It is in almost everything we eat. Thanks for your help.

A: Dear Colleen:

The Zone Diet will have a very positive effect for your allergies because of its reduction in the production of leukotrienes, which are the underlying cause for your allergies. I would also recommend supplementing the Zone Diet with 5-10 grams per day of fish oil since that will also decrease leukotriene production. In terms of adjusting your diet, there are many protein sources (i.e. low-fat cheese, fish, chicken, turkey, etc.) available instead of soy products.
